Egyptian terrorist, al-Qaeda militant Hisham Ashmawi captured in Libya
(International Christian Concern) –Libyan forces have captured one of the most wanted men in the world, Hisham Ashmawi. Ashmawi was a former army officer and is accused of multiple deadly attacks in Egypt.
Ashmawi was the leader of al-Mourabitoun, an al-Qaeda-aligned militant group. He was previously a part of the Islamic State, but is believed to still be linked with the Ansar al-Islam and Jund al-Islam groups.
It is believed that Ashmawi was behind the 2013 assassination of the Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim. He is also suspected of being involved in an attack on a bus convoy of Coptic Christians in May of 2017 that killed 28 people, including two children, and injured over 25 others.
At the time of his capture, Ashmawi had a suicide vest attached to him, but according to authorities he was “unable to detonate it” and was arrested. Libyan authorities are said to be handing Ashmawi back over to Egyptian authorities to await trail.
