Edward Snowden is learning Russian and reading ‘Crime and Punishment’ as he awaits word on his asylum request

National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, who fled to Moscow’s airport June 23, has the goal of staying in Russia for the near future and learn the country’s culture and language, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Snowden will “only be allowed to stay in places designated by Russian law enforcement agencies,” with a certificate stating that he had applied for political asylum, according to a Washington Post report.

However, if Snowden’s request for temporary asylum is granted, a process likely to take at least three months, he would, in theory, have the freedom to get a job and move around the country.

Snowden is “very grateful to Russia for not banishing him and not betraying him,” said Snowden’s attorney, Anatoly Kucherena, who described his client as an “extraordinary” person.

The case has provoked considerable tension between Moscow and Washington, especially with the  G-20 summit in St. Petersburg less than two months before President Barack Obama had planned to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
