Edgar Harrell talks USS Indianapolis sinking, shark attacks and a miraculous rescue
In the wake of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, The Global Dispatch was able to speak to an amazing World War II vet who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Still considered the most catastrophic naval disaster in US history.
Edgar Harrell has authored a new book, Out of the Depths: An Unforgettable WWII Story of Survival, Courage and the Sinking of the USS Indianapolis, which chronicles the tragic events and the miraculous rescue.
During the interview Edgar details the events leading up July 30th, 1945 and the subsequent five days avoiding sharks, battling dehydration and the power of prayer which was key to survival.
From the emotions just after the Japanese torpedoes found their target, cutting off the front of the ship, to the rescue plane attempting to land in eight-foot swells, Edgar Harrell pours out his heart in the interview just as he does in the incredible book.
Your heart will break as you hear the tale from Edgar, who after being rescued, had to remain hospitalized for over three months.
