Ed Asner interview: ‘The Games Maker,’ his ‘FDR’ stage show, Lou Grant, ‘Up’ and Autism Speaks
EXCLUSIVE: Ed Asner is truly one of the greatest actors of all-time with an amazing resume of projects which have been integrated into Americana. From his Emmy Award winning performance as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and the spin-off Lou Grant, to the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s Up, Asner has touched audiences for over four decades.
Asner spoke with The Global Dispatch/Dispatch Radio in an interview to discuss his next film The Games Maker, his one-man FDR stage presentation and his incredible body of work.
“It has a touch of Harry Potter to it,” Asner says of this fantasy film which arrives later this summer.
“It’s about a mythical town…famous for their ability to make games,” he explains noting that co-star Joseph Fiennes “does a marvelous job” and his character now mentors his grandson in a “forced battle between Jospeh Fiennes as the villain, who has taken away the championship capacity from the town, and my family, who are an integral part of the town.”

Asner performs a one-man show FDR (headed to St Louis in April, New Jersey in May) who Asner says was a “hero of mine, I adored him. I regard him as the greatest president.”
Of course fans regularly recognize the iconic actor in public, especially as Lou Grant, but Asner jokes about them “picking up the check” with his signature wit.
With great humility and delight Asner discusses his career, which he describes as a “hobby,” talking about highs and lows before praising the Pixar team for the role in Up.
Asner has an autistic son and his other son has an autistic child, so it’s no surprise that Asner is so passionate about raising awareness and mobilizing the public on the topic.
