Eco-Cuisine recalls mixes due to salmonella risk

Boulder, Colorado vegetarian food service company, Eco-Cuisine, has recalled all lots of a variety of mixes because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, according to an FDA press release Monday.

The products affected include Eco-Cuisine Basic Brownie Mix in 1 pound bag, with 10 bags per box or in 25 bulk box, with product code T3314. Also recalled are Eco-Cuisine Betty Brownie Mix with Vanilla in 17.5 ounce bags, with product code T3333, and Eco-Cuisine Chocolate Cookie Mix in 1 pound bags with product code T3416. Eco-Cuisine Lemon Muffin Mix in 1 pound bags with code T3417 is recalled along with Eco-Cuisine English Scone Mix in 1 pound bags with product code T3418. For a complete list of recalled products, see the link above.

The recall was the result of notification by CHS Foods that ingredients used in the aforementioned products were being recalled for Salmonella.  The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Children are especially susceptible because they frequently put their fingers into their mouths and because their immune systems are still developing.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers who have purchased the above listed products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Eco-Cuisine Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm MDT at 303-402-0289
