Ebola screening expected to increase at airports as Ashoka Mukpo back in US

Another American patient with Ebola arrived in the United States on Monday, reminding the nation that the virus killing thousands of people in West Africa will likely continue crossing U.S. borders.

Ashoka Mukpo, freelance cameraman, contracted the virus while covering the ebola outbreak for NBC and is now on his way to the Nebraska Medical Center.

“All options are on the table for further strengthening the screening process here in the U.S.,” a federal official said, when asked about increased screening at airports. Direct flights from Ebola-affected areas are rare. Travelers typically take flights that connect through other countries. “Then they come here, so that makes it more of a challenge,” the official said.

This will be the second Ebola patient Nebraska experts will treat. 10 days ago, SIM USA physician, Dr. Rick Sacra was released from the Medical Center after being tested as Ebola-free.

The med center’s team of 40-plus nurses, respiratory therapists and care techs is excited to get another patient, said Rosanna Morris, the hospital’s chief operating officer. “I think their confidence level has been boosted given the experience that we had …. They’re ready to go.”
