Dr. Ben Carson withdraws as graduation speaker at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa to speak
Less than a month after the announcement of his retirement, renowned pediatric neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins Dr. Ben Carson announced his withdrawal as graduation speaker at the university’s commencement ceremony May 23.
According to a Washington Post report, Carson said in an e-mail to the dean of the Johns Hopkins medical school, Paul Rothman, “Given all the national media surrounding my statements as to my belief in traditional marriage, I believe it would be in the best interests of the students for me to voluntarily withdraw as your commencement speaker this year.
“My presence is likely to distract from the true celebratory nature of the day. Commencement is about the students and their successes, and it is not about me.”
Today, The Hub reported that renowned neuroscientist and neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa will be giving the commencement address.
A Harvard Medical School graduate, “Dr. Q” came to Johns Hopkins in 2005, where he became a faculty member and surgeon specializing in brain cancer and pituitary tumors. Quiñones-Hinojosa’s titles include professor of neurological surgery, oncology, neuroscience, and cellular and molecular medicine, director of the brain tumor surgery program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and director of the pituitary surgery program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
