Doug Liman to film ‘The Wall’ as ‘Gambit’ movie delayed again

Fans will be waiting a bit longer (again) on that Gambit movie as director Doug Liman appears to headed to a new project over at Amazon as THR reports that he’s now in negotiations to direct the small-scale psychological thriller The Wall.

Gambit comic book 1993“With Gambit undergoing rewrites, Liman plans to direct the first ever original movie for Amazon,” is the big news from THR, who detail the delays, events and the script notes on the new project, which was “Amazon’s first spec script purchase and appeared high on the 2014 Black List….The screenplay, written by Dwain Worrell, tells of a sniper and his spotter who are pinned down behind cover by a legendary sniper.”

With Channing Tatum attached as the titular X-Men character, Gambit has been delayed at least until the fall. Lea Seydoux was also cast in the film as Belladonna, but the delay does call that into question.

“Lea Seydoux, who played a Bond girl in Spectre, was to have been the female lead when Wyatt was the helmer but her present involvement is less clear.”

Fox is working on a Deadpool sequel, an X-Force spin-off and the X-Men franchise after this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but as of now it looks like the studio may suffer a bit of a lull in terms of superhero films given that these pictures are still deep in development, and Fantastic Four didn’t pan out as expected.

As for Liman, he’s already got another film in the can, the drug thriller Mena starring Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleeson, which is set for release in January 2017, and he, Cruise, and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie have been actively developing an Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
