‘Doctor Strange’ movie will be ‘doorway’ to ‘other side’ of Marvel universe

The Doctor Strange film will serve as a “doorway” into Marvel’s supernatural side says Marvel Exec Kevin Feige, previewing the “Phase Three” film, explaining how the movie will expand the MCU.

Doctor Strange Marvel Comics photo“There’s a whole other side to the Marvel universe, which is the supernatural side,” he told Empire. “We’ve always been very interested in this aspect and this is going back to the early days of Strange Tales with Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. I love that stuff.”

“We haven’t done anything that mind-trippy yet and for me, Doctor Strange is our doorway into that.”

Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. His alter ego Stephen Strange was referenced as an Easter egg in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Feige described the “magic” that he’d like to see manifest in the film.

“Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?”

A concrete release date for Doctor Strange is yet to be announced, although Marvel has set dates for future projects. It’s increasingly likely that Thor 3 will land in July 2016 with Doctor Strange being the prelude into the third Avengers, opening in 2017.

Here’s the upcoming schedule as we know it:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 1, 2015
  • Ant-Man – July 17, 2015
  • Captain America 3 – May 6, 2016
  • Marvel Untitled – July 8, 2016
  • Marvel Untitled – May 5, 2017
