DLS-Saint Benilde sophomore, Guillo Cesar Servando, dies in hazing incident: Student government to spearhead anti-hazing campaign

One college sophomore has died and three others were hospitalized this weekend after a fraternity hazing incident on a Taft Avenue condo in Malate, Manila.

The victims from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) have been identified by Philippines media as Guillo Cesar Servando, 18, who was found deceased, John Paul Raval, 18, Lorenze Agustin, 18 and a fourth victim who remains nameless because he is a minor.

According to a report in The Inquirer Sunday, one of the victims told police they were picked up from his unit at One Archers Place by members of the Alpha Kappa Rho (Akrho) fraternity-University of Santo Tomas chapter Saturday afternoon for their initiation. They were taken to the frat house blindfolded and later returned to One Archers Place.

Police responded to a call from condominium guards who said they thought that the four students were drunk as they were “not walking steadily.”

The surviving students called EMTs after noticing Servado was not moving. When the ambulance arrived they found Servado dead and all four were beaten and bruised.

The university released a statement fromVice Chancellor Robin Serrano, which was posted on their Facebook page:

“This is a time of great sadness as De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde mourns the demise of one of our students and prays for the recovery of the other students who are also victims of a recent fraternity hazing incident.

“The Benildean Community sends its prayers to the students’ families and friends. During this difficult time, Benilde responds with utmost respect and deference to all who are affected and enjoins everyone to respect the privacy of the families.

“The College reiterates its prohibition of fraternities and fraternity-related violence. We will continue to fully cooperate with the police authorities as they investigate this deplorable incident.”

It is reported that the university is cooperating with the investigation.

According to a UST statement @TheVarsitarian posted on Twitter: The supposed Akrho members involved in the death of St. Benilde student are not UST students. Akrho not a recognized student org.

In a series of tweets today from JC Jalbuna with the university’s student government, an anti-hazing gathering will take place at DLS-CSB today, which will involve other colleges and universities in Manila.
