DL Moody’s legacy lives on as church celebrates 150th anniversary with ‘faithfulness of God’
The Moody Church made headlines last week as one of the Chicago’s oldest institutions celebrated its 150th anniversary. Now Pastor Lutzer reflects on the church’s history and legacy with The Global Dispatch.

Interior of The Moody Church
Dwight Lyman Moody came to Chicago in 1856 at 19 years old, determined to be a businessman but soon saw his Sunday School explode into a revival.
“When D.L. Moody began the Sunday School which eventually grew into this church, no one could have predicted that it would minister continuously in Chicago for a century and a half,” The Moody Church’s senior pastor, Dr. Erwin Lutzer, tells The Global Dispatch.
“The fact that The Moody Church proclaims the same Gospel today as it did 150 years ago is a testament to the faithfulness of God in providing leaders who have insisted we remain true to the church’s original beliefs and purpose. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us—those to whom we owe gratitude for their steadfastness. Because they sacrificed, we have been enriched; because they passed on the torch, we will continue the race.”
Anniversary Celebration
The Moody Church’s sesquicentennial anniversary celebration will span four months and culminate in a Legacy Dinner in May. The celebration also includes a commemorative book, Celebrating the Joy of Changed Lives, which traces the history of The Moody Church and contains previously unpublished photos and correspondence.
Throughout the anniversary celebration, all Chicagoans are warmly invited to attend complimentary guided tours of the historical building on Sundays following worship services at 10am. The Moody Church is located at 1635 N. LaSalle, Chicago, IL, 60614.
