Disney brings James Gunn back for ‘GOTG 3’, will film after ‘Suicide Squad 2’
Disney feels comfortable leaving James Gunn’s past in the past as the creator behind the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films will return for the third installment. According to a new report, Gunn will first direct The Suicide Squad before moving onto Guardians 3.
Deadline reports that Gunn and Disney President Alan Horn continued to meet on multiple occasions after his firing, and persuaded by Gunn’s apology and how he handled the situation, leading Horn to reverse course and reinstate Gunn as the director.
“I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months,” Gunn said Friday in Twitter after the news broke, in his first activity on the account since apologizing back in July. “I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be.”
The entire cast of the film was outspoken in its desire to have Gunn back and the full cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Pom Klementieff are expected back.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 probably won’t start filming until late 2020, at the very earliest, with a target release of 2022 or 2023. Pratt‘s schedule continues to fill up and he’s got Jurassic World 3 to start shooting later this year. Saldana is working on the multitude of Avatar projects, Diesel and Cooper are always in high demand, so expect this to land in the late part of Marvel’s fourth phase.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
