Disney adds live-action ‘Mulan’ plans, joins ‘BATB’ ‘Jungle Book’ ‘Dumbo’

Disney announced plans for a live-action adaptation of their popular film Mulan, which would be added to the packed plate of similar films: Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens), Dumbo (directed by Tim Burton), The Jungle Book (all-star cast, directed by Jon Favreau) as well as a sequels to Alice in Wonderland and Enchanted (a hybrid film of animation and live-action.)

THR reports that “Disney bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney’s 1998 animated film…Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (We’re the Millers) are producing the new project.”

Mulan photo bow arrow appleDisney found big success with Cinderella, earning over $336 million thus far at the global box office with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland grossing $1.02 billion and Maleficent earning a $758.4 million worldwide last year.

“The 1998 film, directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, followed a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father’s place in the army and go to war. With the help of her trusty dragon sidekick Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and, eventually, one of the country’s greatest heroines. It earned $304.3 million worldwide, earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations and resulted in a 2005 direct-to-DVD sequel, Mulan II,” THR summarized.

Favreau’s The Jungle Book stars Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johanssen, Ben Kingsley, Christopher Walker, Giancarlo Esposito with Neel Sethi as Mowgli. The film is arriving in theaters on April 16, 2016.

Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass comes to screens on May 27, 2016 with Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Martin Sheen, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman back as their respective characters with Sacha Baron Cohen, Rhys Ifans and Toby Jones.

Watson and Stevens headlines the cast for Beauty and the Beast with Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline an Josh Gad. BATB arrives March 17, 2017.

Tim Burton’s Dumbo doesn’t have a release date yet.
