Despite voting against two gun control bills, Democrats continue ‘sit-in stunt’ and ignore Chicago gun violence

Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) rallied the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday and staged a “sit-in” on the House floor in order to force a vote on gun control. Democrats chanted “No bill, no break” and lawmakers were forced to recess as the Democrats continued to occupy the well and refused to leave. Over in the Senate, the parties united to vote against four different measures designed to curtail the second amendment.

Paul Ryan called the Democratic lawmakers’ sit-in Wednesday to protest inaction on gun laws a “publicity stunt,” saying that House liberals were more interested in headlines than solving the problem.

“This is nothing more than a publicity stunt,” Ryan said, saying House Democrats would infringe on Second Amendment rights and do nothing to prevent terrorist attacks. “This is not about a solution to a problem. This is about trying to get attention.”
Ryan said they would not take up gun bills that the Senate already voted down on Monday. He called on legislation to be drafted in a “calm and cool manner,’ not through sit-ins.
“We have lost hundreds and thousands of innocent people to gun violence. Tiny little children, babies, students and teachers, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons, friends and neighbors, and what has this body done? Mr. Speaker, nothing. Not one thing,” Lewis (D-Ga.) bellowed from the House floor Wednesday morning. “We have turned deaf ears to the blood of the innocent and the concern of our nation.”
Liberal supporters of the sit-in took issue with Ryan and not acknowledging their stunt, here’s the anti-gun outlet NY Daily News:

In a disgusting demonstration of his disregard for the Democrats, and the majority of Americans who agree with them, Ryan strolled to the rostrum around 10 p.m., gaveled the House into session and tried to bring order for a vote on a measure to overturn a veto — on legislation regarding financial advisers — by President Obama.

The Speaker’s spineless move on the off-topic issue was met by a chorus of boos, shouts of “Shame” and a raucous rendition of “We Shall Overcome.”

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, said Ryan’s comments were “disrespectful to the nation.”

“The speaker should come forward with his own proposals,” he told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront” Wednesday night in a phone call from the House floor.
Lewis and other Democrats didn’t mention the shootings in Chicago over Father’s Day weekend, the 13 dead or any new measure with more focus on curtailing the rampant gang violence. Fox 6 detailed the shootings, how a 16-year-old teen was among the 12 people murdered in 54 different shootings across the city.
