As of Friday, there has been at least eight cases reported on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, with most cases from the Jensen Beach area of Martin County and at least one case in Miami-Dade.

All the cases have been called “locally acquired”, meaning it’s in the mosquito population there and there is no history of international travel.

On the Saturday, August 24 airing of Dispatch Radio, the Director of Environmental Health for the Florida Department of Health in Martin County, Bob Washam joined me on the show to discuss the situation on the Treasure Coast (Listen below).

Washam, an experienced public health professional described the actions health and environmental officials in Martin County are taking to address the “locally-acquired” dengue fever occurrences and prevent any further cases.

In addition, Washam gave recommendations for the public to prevent mosquito borne diseases of all types.
