Delbert Belton murder case delayed, for the fifth time, now until January

Defense lawyers requested a delay in the trial for two teenagers accused of killing a World War II veteran.

Demetrius Glenn and Kenan Adams-Kinard, both 17, have been accused of punching and beating Delbert Belton, 88, outside the Eagles Lodge on August 21, 2013. Prosecutors are pressing for the teeenagers to be tried together and the lawyers claim they need more time.

“The trial was scheduled to begin in November, but on Monday defense lawyers argued they needed more time to investigate the circumstances surrounding Belton’s murder. They requested that the trial be delayed until January,” writes KREM.

Adams-Kinard and Glenn both face charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. They could face life in prison if convicted.

The first delay, a year ago, pushed the case back to March, but this will actually be the fifth delay. In May, the delay was over court documents being kept from the media: “The delay was ordered after Glenn’s attorney, Chris Phelps, argued that he didn’t want his client’s case from being detailed in the media and that while he respected the public’s right to know he wanted to insure Glenn received a fair and impartial trial.”

Court workers said the judge will make a decision regarding a trial date sometime this week.
