‘Deadpool’ is perfect for misogynistic, vulgar and subversive fanboys
If Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith partnered to adapt Marvel’s Deadpool with all of the violence, profanity and perverted jokes imagined, it will still probably fall short of Tim Miller’s creation with Ryan Reynolds as the obnoxious ‘Merc with a Mouth.’ Surprising business insiders, who now scrambled to make R-rated superhero projects move forward, Deadpool got all of the fanboys to put down the X-Box controller and head to the movie theater.
Why? Because they have to.
Deadpool is a second rate, X-Men knock-off character, derived from DC Comics’ Slade Wilson (Deathstroke), Wolverine and Rob Liefeld’s pubescent fantasies played out in Reynolds.
STYLE
From the credits to the post-credits scene, Deadpool is a fast paced, entertaining ride with a ton of style. Strap in for pop culture references, slow motion camera shots, flashbacks and flash forwards weaving together the simplistic story Miller is telling. Deadpool kicks down the fourth rail to crack with the audience inside jabs and crass humor making those fanboys feel like they are smartest people on their block.
SEX ISN’T LOVE
Gratuitously Deadpool attempts to sell itself as a “love story,” but defines Wade’s relationship Morena Baccarin’s as the dysfunctional yet compatible equal in kinky sex. The scene pushes the audience’s comfort levels and should viewers when the see a future “UNRATED” version for sale at some point in the future.
While there was buzz of Reynold’s frontal nudity, it was nothing that CGI flames couldn’t distort or hide during an intense battle scene against the film’s antagonist, Ajax (Ed Skrein).
Nicholas Sparks has nothing to feel as romance is not what Miller is offering up in this “love story” which is little more than NC-17 content, watered down to get an R-rating.
ACTION, VILLAINS AND THE ABSENCE OF A PLOT
Revenge.
Joking about the vigilante committing murder doesn’t change the fact that Deadpool never embraces a shred of humanity. Reynolds pull off every punchline as he goes Matrix and hits every shot like Agent 47, but at the end of the day I was hoping Colossus would smack Deadpool down, so he can be taken away. In fact, Reynolds IS Deadpool, even more than Hugh Jackman is Wolverine.
Skrein’s Ajax was bland and equally replaceable as Gina Carano’s Angel Dust going up against Colossus.
BRIGHT SPOTS
Teen angst was redefined with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and the CGI creation of Colossus (Stefan Kapicic, Greg LaSalle) was the highlight of the film.
Are the jokes funny? Yes, much of the time. Is the film incredibly overrated? Absolutely.
Nerd culture is enjoying a plethora of films and pop culture non-sense to get into the bank accounts of their fans. Deadpool takes aim at Marvel, pretty faces and political correctness, but only when it fits their fanboy agenda. Deadpool is nothing more than an incarnation of obnoxious Gamers dreaming they could don the red suit to live out their uber misogynistic, perverted fantasies while trying to feel like they are the “normal ones.”
