Cyclospora outbreak tops 250 cases
The cyclospora outbreak that has affected parts of the Midwest continues to increase in cases as the total number now exceeds 250, in at least six states.
The vast majority of cases have been reported from three states–Iowa (118), Nebraska (68) and Texas (65). Smaller numbers of cases have been reported from Wisconsin, Illinois and Kansas.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that most of the illness onset dates have ranged from mid-June through early July.
At least eight people have required hospitalization for their illness.

Investigations from the several states suggest the source of the outbreak may be from fresh vegetables.
It is not yet clear whether the cases from all of the states are part of the same outbreak as that part of the investigation is ongoing.
Cyclosporiasis occurs in many countries, but it seems to be most common in tropical and subtropical regions, according to the CDC.
In the United States, foodborne outbreaks of cyclosporiasis since the mid-1990s have been linked to various types of imported fresh produce, including raspberries, basil, snow peas, and mesclun lettuce; no commercially frozen or canned produce has been implicated.
