Colorado man, Elijah McClain dead after resisting police arrest, sister says it was ‘case of police brutality’

An investigation is underway after a Colorado man, Elijah McClain, died following a confrontation with police in suburban Denver.

The Denver Post reports Aurora police received a call about 10:32 p.m a “suspicious person” wearing a ski mask and waving his arms as he walked down a street Aug. 24. Officers say McClain, 23, refused to stop and fought back when they tried to take him into custody.

According to the details, officers called an ambulance company and Aurora Fire Rescue due to the “level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state.”

McClain suffered cardiac arrest during the ambulance ride to a local hospital.

Following the confrontation and he had to be placed on life support, which was removed on Friday.

“This was a case of police brutality of someone so sweet,” his younger sister Samara McClain said. “He doesn’t deserve this. He shouldn’t be in a hospital.”

Aurora police spokesman Anthony Camacho said Friday he couldn’t confirm the extent of McClain’s injuries. He said three officers are on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated by Denver and Aurora police as well as the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Samara explained that Elijah McClain regularly wore a mask due to his anemia and had gone to a corner store to purchase some tea that night for a cousin.

“The next thing you know he was in the hospital,” Samara McClain said.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said his department will release body camera footage of the confrontation after prosecutors complete their review.

The title of this article is disgraceful. He was not resisting arrest, he was not being arrested, there was NO CRIME to be arrested for!!! The police have admitted that. Change the title! I am appalled at the title of this article. Please fix it. This young many deserves justice!!

      Based on this report: https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/aurora-officers-involved-in-elijah-mcclain-arrest-did-not-violate-pd-policy-review-finds

Police brutality or not, Elijah resisted and suffered a heart attack. We are aware of the petition to reopen the case, but there is no new evidence. It was a tragedy for sure.

Officers had responded to a call about a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. When they arrived, they contacted McClain, who resisted when the officers tried to detain him

Reporting the details of the case and story is NOT the same as approving of the police, their actions or their behavior

Send links to more information as it arrives and we’ll review it

Oh, the editor of this piece of trash blog is defending his sloppy racist writer in claiming that the police, all three of whose body cameras mysteriously fell off, did nothing wrong in spite of the audio recordings. Time to find the advertisers?

        • So an ongoing investigation is NOT being reported the way you want and the presumption is that I must be a racist?!?! What an awful assumption for you to make.

I’ve decided to publish an update to the case, but I’m not changing the original post and details. Police was responding a call of a suspicious person, stopping Elijah and he’s clearing resisting in some way so those cameras didn’t “Mysteriously” fall off, there was a skirmish as Elijah was putting up a fight in some way.

I did NOT make a judgment on what he was doing, he was doing something wrong etc…it’s call resisting arrest. Don’t fight the police, have your day in court IF you are even arrested. The police usually detain someone, find out what’s going on and in a case like that, let that person go….Elijah fought back

The investigation needs to evaluate the autopsy as the officers described a situation similar to excited delirium where the chokehold was needed to restrain someone. He was clearly hyped and amped up. The EMT gave him the drug ketamine and they administered the drug….heart attack…life support and horrible tragic death.

What we saw on the autopsy results pointed out that the ketamine amount was not enough to kill him.

Argue a case of police brutality. Argue that the caller was racist for calling on Elijah in the first place.

But attributing everyone not reporting and handling this case the way you like racist…..that makes you the horrible person.
