Clayton Whittemore Trial Update: Jury hears confession, sees photos of bloody weapon
The murder trial of Clayton Whittemore has finally moved ahead after several delays. On Monday, jurors watched a taped interview Clayton Whittemore gave to police investigators shortly after Alexandra Kogut was found dead in her College at Brockport dorm room in 2012.
During this interview, Whittemore describes fighting with Kogut, telling investigators he felt disrespected. Here he confesses to punching in the head and hitting her with a hair straightener.
“I thought she was dying, I really did. I thought it was like watching an animal suffer before it dies. That’s why I did the other stuff I did,” Whittemore says.
During the hearing on Monday, letters from the college freshmen to her then-boyfriend stating how she “tests” his patience and referred to her “stupid problems.”
Utica OD noted the details of the another letter read: “She apologized for always crying. She said she wished she could help Whittemore with his problems, but also said it was probably good she was far away at SUNY Brockport so he could focus on his own school work.”
The focus here is to examine their dysfunctional relationship and the tensions, according to the attorneys speaking with The Global Dispatch.
Monday afternoon, DA Sandra Doorley released the photos of Alex Kogut’s room after the murder. Notes can be seen indicating Whittemore was an anticipated guest and another photo includes the bloody iron used in the attack. Check out these pics HERE.
Whittemore’s attorneys are planning to seek a manslaughter conviction instead of the murder charge. The defense is claiming Whittemore was suffering from extreme emotional distress at the time of the killing. In fact, they failed to disqualify his comments that he “just snapped.”
