Christian Duke, Florida college student, faces charges for making Mythbusters bomb
A Florida Institute of Technology student is accused of detonating a homemade bomb at the school, a device the student said he learned how to make by watching the Discovery Channel TV show “MythBusters.”
Christian Barnes Duke, age 19, created a chemical reaction bomb and now faces two felony counts.
“The ensuing investigation revealed that Christian Barnes Duke, age 19, possessed a destructive device that he made from common household chemicals and items,” a press release from Melbourne police says.
Authorities detailed how the “container” was modeled after the Mythbusters device and was detonate after pressure and heat built up. Possessing the device on school grounds and making the destructive device are both felonies.
“Duke placed this device in a stairwell within the school dorm and detonated the device, causing a loud blast that disrupted other students who were in the building at the time,” the news release says.
Florida Tech issued this statement: “We take student safety very seriously and have appropriately referred this matter to Melbourne police. We will continue to collaborate with the police department as necessary.”
