Chris Christie wants to ‘run the country’, Does that line up with the Constitution?

Fidel Castro runs his country. Kim Jong Un runs his country. I could go on, but you get the point.

Although he is not alone in this ambition and power among candidates, Democrat or Republican, New Jersey Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Chris Christie, clearly one of the “Strongmen” in the race, recently talked about “who can run the country”.

Another “Strongman”, Donald Trump took a shot at him earlier this week and this is how Mr. Christie reacted to the attacks:

“This is not a game where you’re puffing out your chest and who can be the biggest toughest guy in public,” Christie continued. “It’s about who can run the country.”

Fortunately, and Mr Christie being a former United States Attorney for New Jersey, which he reminds us ad nauseam, should know that the Constitution was designed so that our President does not run our country. In fact, he or she does not even run the federal government.

Unfortunately, few to none in the media care to point this out. But I’d be happy to point out the responsibilities and authority the executive has, as the founders in their great wisdom, decided some 230 years ago.

What does Article II, Section 2 have to say:

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.

He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.

The Executive is a co-equal branch of the federal government. Clearly, the President DOES NOT run the country.
