Chonda Pierce interview: I ‘want to go out laughing’ ‘comedy was always secondary’

Chonda Pierce is following up her Chonda Pierce: Laughing in the Dark event with her Happily Laughter After tour, coming to Florida for several days and touring around the country. Chonda paused from her busy schedule to speak with Dispatch Radio about the tour, upcoming events and what fans can expect.

“People are always looking for the ‘Happily Ever After’ and that doesn’t happen always,” Chonda says, explaining the tour name (which host Brandon Jones jokes about more than once). “But what you can do is laugh all the way to the end….to the end of the story.”

She jokes about her “End” and how she “wants to go out laughing” saying that’s “what I’ve done my whole life.”

The humor just burst from the Emmy nominated comedian as she talks about coming to Florida and touring around the country, cutting up with Brandon about funerals, taking naps and of course, more on the tour.

“We had open mic night,” Chonda reveals of her mother’s funeral, saying “there is life after death and there is LIFE TO LIVE, even after you’ve lost someone.”

Chonda is no stranger to difficulties, a topic detailed in her Chonda Pierce: Laughing in the Dark event, now available on DVD, where the lost of her husband, the estranged relationship with her daughter, the battles with depression and heart-wrenching problems take center stage and proved to be a witness to others.

“…I certainly don’t answers for everybody out there, but I can tell you where to find them,” she says. “I can tell you where I found a lot of them…the comedy was always secondary.”

Chonda works closely with Branches Recovery Center and speaks to that work as well.
