China reports human H5N1 avian flu infection in Guangxi Province

The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Health Department reported today a confirmed human case of avian influenza (AI) A/H5N1 infection, according to a press release dated Feb. 1 (computer translated).

According to health officials, the patient is a 75-year-old man from Yufeng District who presented with a cough, sputum symptoms, headache, chest tightness and difficulty breathing at the City People’s Hospital emergency department on Jan. 27.

On Jan. 29, a CT scan showed multiple lobar pneumonia in both lungs and pleural effusion, mediastinal lymph nodes, lungs appeared patchy, lung disease progressed rapidly, patients in critical condition, autonomous medical expert group is working with medical experts in Liuzhou conduct rescue.

He tested positive for H5N1 AI using nucleic acid technology on Friday.

The patient has multiple underlying medical conditions to include diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

The epidemiological investigation shows that the patient had  a history of exposure to live poultry.

This is the first human H5N1 AI case in Guangxi Province in 5 years.
