Chicago teen girl, 14, arrested and charged with stabbing another teen girl 40 times

Authorities in suburban Chicago say a 14-year-old girl is in custody for the death of an 11-year-old girl who lived in her home.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim said prosecutors approved the charge Wednesday in the slaying of the younger girl, whose body was found in Mundelein Tuesday.

Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd said the autopsy revealed 30 stab wounds with a small kitchen knife across the girl’s neck, chest and arms. The girl was sliced three times across the face and had defensive wounds on her left and right hands, as well as bruises on her chest, Rudd said.

A juvenile court judge will decide whether to confirm the charge and keep the teenager in custody at a closed hearing.

Authorities haven’t released details on the girls or how they’re related. But officials say both girls lived in the same Mundelein home, about 30 miles northwest of Chicago.

No parent was home at the time of the slaying.

Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther says the older girl called 911 around 8:30 a.m. and answered the door for police.

“This is a very intricate investigation that is of the utmost sensitivity,” Guenther said.

No adult was home at the time. The discovery of the body Tuesday morning prompted a brief lockdown at nearby schools.

“We are very confident this is an isolated incident and there are no other concerns to the neighbors and or the community around it,” Guenther said.
