Chagas disease in dogs: San Antonio Humane Society reports seven cases so far in 2013
In a follow-up to the Chagas disease cases in dogs in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to speak to the Director of Communications with the San Antonio Humane Society, Seamus Nelson to get the latest update on the situation in South Texas.
On the Saturday, Oct. 5 airing of Dispatch Radio, Mr Nelson reported that the case count for Chagas disease in dogs is now up to seven, with four additional cases confirmed recently.
In addition, Nelson explained that the dogs were contracting the parasite by eating the “kissing bug” and described the symptoms for dog owners to on the look for in a case of Chagas.
He also gave some great advice to pet owners on what things they can do to help prevent their dog from getting this life threatening parasite.
The San Antonio Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill organization that has served Bexar County and its surrounding areas since 1952.
