Chadwick Boseman set for 5 films, ‘Black Panther’ solo movie in 2017, concept art revealed

Chadwick Boseman will be Marvel Studios’ first solo minority main character, with the news that he will take the title role in the newly announced Black Panther movie, one of several new titles revealed at the Marvel Studios event at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles.

Deadline noted that “Boseman joins other diverse characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is the first to get his own standalone and that is notable. There have been rumors of Anthony Mackie and his supporting Falcon character taking over the Captain America shield from Chris Evans in some capacity after Avengers 3, which has been titled Avengers: Infinity War and split into two parts.

Boseman is best known for his roles in 42 and Get On Up, playing Jackie Robinson and James Brown, respectively.

The Black Panther is T’Challa, the head of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and was a long-serving member of the Avengers who also enjoyed multiple critically acclaimed solo runs throughout his 48-year history in comic books.

Wiki notes that “The title “Black Panther” is a rank of office, chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan. As chieftain, the Panther is entitled to eat a special Heart-Shaped Herb which, in addition to his mystical connection with the Wakandan Panther God, grants him superhumanly acute senses and increases his strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and agility to Olympic-levels.”

Boseman has reportedly signed on for five films as the character, beginning with a role in Captain America: Civil War after being rumored to have a cameo or small part in next summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In the Civil War comic book story, Panther ultimately sides with Captain America against Iron Man and his alliance.

Black Panther is set for release on November 3, 2017.
