Celia Barquin Arozamena killer, Collin Richards, sentenced to life in prison
Last September, the Big 12 Champion and Iowa State University’s (ISU) female athlete of the year, Celia Barquin Arozamena was found stabbed to death at the Coldwater Links golf course in Ames, Iowa. She was killed by a 22-year-old homeless man, Collin Richards. He lived in a tent near the golf course where Celia was playing.
When police questioned Richards in September, his hand was still bleeding. Authorities have not been able to explain why Richards did it, which makes the loss even worse, family attorney, Leon Vidaller said. Richards’ family and friends have said his dependence on methamphetamine and other drugs likely led to mental health issues and the violence.
In June of this year, 22-year-old Collin Richards pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Last Friday, Richards was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Barquin was a top golfer in Spain as a teenager and came to Iowa State to pursue her career. She was a civil engineering major at ISU.
