‘Captain Marvel’ adds ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ star DeWanda Wise

The latest addition to the expanding cast of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s upcoming Captain Marvel movie is the star of Spike Lee’s acclaimed Netflix show She’s Gotta Have It, DeWanda Wise.

Deadline reports that Wise has signed on to join the upcoming Marvel Studios movie in a “plum role” opposite Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, but they make no mention of which character she’ll be playing. Fans are already speculating that the role will be Monica Rambeau, a.k.a. Spectrum.

The outlet summarized that “She’ll co-star opposite Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn. Wise takes the role just as Netflix renewed for a second season She’s Gotta Have It, the series adaptation of Spike Lee’s breakthrough film about a woman balancing a life with three lovers.”

Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers.

Feige announced that the superhero film will be set in the ’90s, before the Avengers ever thought of assembling, and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to reprise his role as Nick Fury.

After great showings in Rogue One and Place Beyond the Pines, Mendelsohn will be the film’s major villain, possibly the tyrannical Kree officer, Yon-Rogg. In the comics, Rogg was originally an enemy of Mar-Vell’s who kidnapped Carol Danvers in an effort to draw out his former crew-mate. Their subsequent battle resulted in Danvers gaining her powers.

Captain Marvel will be the first major movie role for Wise, who previously starred in the series Shots Fired and Underground.

Captain Marvel is slated to arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.
