‘Captain Marvel’ adds Annette Bening as Carol Danvers mom or a scientist, depending on the rumor

Four time Oscar-nominee Annette Bening is joining the cast of Captain Marvel as the lead character’s mother.

The new Marvel film will have Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, who takes up the mantle of Captain Marvel during the Kree-Skrull war. While THR broke the story, stating that her role is that of a scientist, Variety’s Justin Kroll says that Bening will play the mother of Carol Danvers.  Maybe it’s possible they are both correct.

Old and new faces join Larson for the adventure. Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) are back as the film is set in the 1990’s, before the events of The Avengers. Also back are two performers from Guardians of the Galaxy: Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou, set as Kree soldiers Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer.

As mentioned, the film centers on the Kree-Skrull war, the impact on Earth, hence the Kree-version of Captain Marvel’s suit revealed in the concept art and teases thus far. Jude Law is set to play Mar-Vell with Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, the early version of Captain Marvel and a Kree geneticist in the comic books. Rogue One and Ready Player One star Ben Mendelsohn is again playing the villain, likely a character named Yon-Rogg (but that has not been confirmed).

Captain Marvel marks the first comic book movie gig for Bening and her first turn towards a blockbuster in years. Bening received Oscar nominations as a leading actress for American BeautyBeing Julia, and The Kids Are All Right, as well as one for her supporting role in The Grifters.

The film also stars Lashana Lynch (who recently replaced a departed cast member DeWanda Wise) are all set to appear in the movie, joined by Algenis Perez Soto (Sugar), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), and McKenna Grace (I, Tonya). Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are in the directors’ chairs. Geneva Robertson-Dworet penned the most recent script, after previous drafts were turned in by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman.

Captain Marvel is slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
