Camp counselor Jose Luis Casumbal Valenzuela arrested for sexual abuse of girl at camp
A camp counselor in Maryland has been arrested for inappropriately touching an 11-year-old girl at the Holton-Arms Creative Summer camp in Bethesda.
Montgomery County police have charged Jose Luis Casumbal Valenzuela, 43, with sex abuse of a minor and third-degree sex offense. Police confirmed that the victim attended the camp between June 30 and July 3 and are asking the public to help to determine if there are other victims who have not come forward.
The girl told detectives that Valenzuela touched her while he was teaching magic classes at the camp.
“On Thursday, July 9, we were made aware of an allegation of improper touching of a summer camper by a camp counselor. It is our understanding that an arrest has been made. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and cannot share any further information.
“Holton-Arms puts the highest priority on the emotional well-being and safety of our students. We are and always have been committed to providing a secure environment for our children to learn and play. The School conducts comprehensive background checks of our summer counselors annually. We take these types of allegations very seriously.”
Valenzuela has been an employee at the camp since the summer of 2012. The DC man is nicknamed “Jolly” and was arrested without incident.
Anyone who believes they were also a victim of Valenzuela are being asked to call Montgomery County police’s Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5460.
