California high school student found dead in car identified as Graciela Martinez

A 14-year-old girl was found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a car parked outside of Madera South High School, Madera police said.

Her brother told officers they drove together to the high school. He had an early class and she stayed in the car since her class started an hour later, police said.

The teen has been identified as Graciela Martinez. When he returned that afternoon he discovered her body and rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“At this stage in the investigation, we’re looking at all factors,” Madera Police Sgt. Robert Salas told KFSN-TV. “What was the reason she didn’t wake up, or what’s the reason she didn’t exit the vehicle?”

After another question from the press, Salas repeated.

“At this stage of the investigation it appears that heat may have played a role in her death, but an underlying medical condition may be discovered once further medical examination is performed. There does not appear to be anything criminal in nature at this stage of the investigation.”

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
