California: Gavin Newsom touts ‘single payer healthcare’ including illegal immigrants, Nick Searcy says he’s ‘buying votes’

California gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom repeated the promises he made earlier this month that he’d turn California into a single-payer healthcare state, telling the Pod Save America podcast that he plans on expanding Medicare to cover every illegal immigrant, not just their citizens.

Gavin Newsom

“I’d like to see if we can control our own destiny,” Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, said. “I’m not naive about it. I did universal health care when I was mayor, fully implemented regardless of pre-existing conditions, ability to pay, and regardless of your immigration status.”

“San Francisco is the only universal health care system for all undocumented residents in America, very proud of that. We proved it could be done without bankrupting the city. I’d like to see that we can extend that to the rest of the state,” he continued.

Newsom, of course, was mayor of San Francisco, a city that’s in dire financial straits and struggling to manage simple tasks like cleaning human feces off its sidewalks as a result of some of its bizarre, far-left policies.

Ahead of an interview with the Dispatch, actor/director Nick Seary tweeted: “Democrats like @GavinNewsom will literally destroy the state of California if we continue to elect them.”

When asked about this, he added that Newsom is “just buying votes.”

On the conditions in San Francisco: “You need a map to walk around all of the feces from the homeless…it’s just insane.”

Here’s another tweet from Newsom:

“If we don’t offer coverage to everyone – regardless of income or immigration status – we will still carry the expense. Universal access isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s the economically smart thing to do.”

FACT CHECK: Newsom’s numbers on San Francisco are completely false:

From Business Insiders article titled: “15 Mayors Who Must Shred The Budget To Save Their Bankrupt Cities”:

Deficit through FY2011: $483,000,000

per capita: $600

San Francisco is extremely liberal. That’s the only explanation for how the city can run a deficit every year in the past decade and not set off widespread panic. As for the mayor, he would rather please all his constituents and then get out of dodge, next year, when he runs for lieutenant governor

But with a deficit soaring to $787 million by 2012, the young mayor may finally confront the budget. “We’ve go to make the tough choices this year,” Newsom told the Chronicle. “It’s so easy to kick the can down the road … but for every delayed decision, we will pay the price year after year.” Newsome’s budget plan includes seizing half of a $25 million reserve fund — the maximum allowed — and save $100 million through extensive furloughs. Job cuts are likely and pension cuts will be on a June ballot.

Bloomberg in March, 2017:

San Francisco’s budget deficit is projected to hit $907 million by 2022, up from a previous estimate of $848 million, as costs such as retirement expenses outpace revenue.

Newsom claims “We proved it could be done without bankrupting the city,” but the price tag nears $1 billion in debt for the city.
