C.S. Lewis’ ‘The Great Divorce’ comes alive, challenging the spiritual condition of the audience

Fellowship for Performing Arts, led by Max McLean, is presenting a stage adaptation of the C.S. Lewis classic: The Great Divorce. Like The Screwtape Letters, McLean achieves the implausible: making Lewis accessible to Christians and non-Christians alike, while maintaining the integrity of Lewis’ brillance.

The Great Divorce cast photo bus rideThe Great Divorce is a ninety-minute journey with three actors who transform into nineteen characters, taking the audience on a “bus ride” from hell to analyze the spiritual struggle for each person’s spirit.

Tom Beckett, Joel Rainwater and Christa Scott-Reed are all mesmerizing as they transition from narrators to conflicted spirits to veteran saints offering encouragement and wisdom – and, oh yeah, back again.

Divorce is a heavy, challenging work by Lewis, yet McLean and director Bill Castellino maximize fantastic costumes and an engaging set design to pull each audience member along for the ride.

Jokes about the grass beneath their feet, banter over fame and a mysterious lizard provide the perfect mixture of levity to ease the self-examination of sin into your subconscious.

The play is a bit too heavy for a younger audience (they will get bored), but Christians will come away truly “wowed” by the presentation. As McLean explains in the interview, Lewis trancends the “preaching to the choir” so the most angry of atheists will still comes away with an enjoyable experience.

Be sure to stay after for the quick Q&A with McLean – it adds an even deeper connection to the source material and the production team.

The Great Divorce receives 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
