Bulacan student, Jonas Joshua Garcia, ‘brain dead’ after competing in a DepEd boxing match
A 16-year-old Bulacan has gone into a coma and been declared “brain dead” after competing in a Department of Education boxing match in Central Luzon Monday, according to an Inquirer report.
The teen, Jonas Joshua Garcia of San Miguel, was in a boxing match from a competitor from Bataan at the Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association meet in Iba, Zambales.
During the second round, Garcia complained of dizziness and the fight was stopped. He was rushed the Zambales provincial hospital where he is in a coma.
According to ABS-CBN News, the Bulacan team has withdrawn all 10 amateur boxers from the tournament. The team will also recommend to the DepEd superintendent to abolish all combative sports such as boxing , taekwondo and arnis in future athletic events of DepEd.
The Department of Education said they are not negligent for what happened to Garcia claiming it was an accident.
