Bronx teaching asst Maria Contreras charged in rape of disabled boy
A teaching assistant in the Bronx has been charged in the rape of a mentally disabled student made her first court appearance on Sunday.
Maria Contreras, 29, supported by family and friends, still asserts that she did not commit any wrongdoing. A judge set bail at $29,000.
Police arrested Contreras on Saturday night after authorities said she had a sexual relationship with a 14-year old boy who is described as being mentally disabled.
The Department of Education says Contreras is a substitute paraprofessional at the Bronx Academy of Letters in Mott Haven.
Authorities maintain the rapes unfolded in her Barker Avenue apartment approximately six times over the course of a week. The teen boy told his mother who then phone police. Contreras has been fired from her job.
Contreras is charged with six counts of rape and two counts of a criminal sex act.
The judge did require Contreras to sign an order of protection, promising not to have any contact with the student.
The Department of Education released a statement saying, “These allegations are incredibly disturbing. Ms. Contreras has been removed from her position and will no longer be employed by the DOE. We are working with NYPD on their investigation.”
Contreras was originally nominated by other teachers to get a permanent position at her school.
Contreras’ public defender said there are no witnesses and no physical evidence or a video, and no evidence of electronic communications between the boy and Contreras. Her attorney also said it is school policy that no teacher is ever left alone with a student.
Inside the courtroom, as many as forty family members and friends were in attendance to support the woman, who is the mother of two toddlers.
It’s actually quite rare for any woman to molest a child or to rape an adult.
Any person is twice as likely to be raped by a black person than a white person. According to U.S. statistics from 2005 to 2010, for every 100 rapists, 57 rapists were white and 27 rapists were black. (see Table 4 on Page 5 of the PDF.)
http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=4594
For every 100 people in the U.S., 62 people are white and 13 black. There are 4.7 times the number of white people than black.
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html
The ratio of rapists is 57:27, or 2.1 white to 1 black. The ratio of American people is 62:13, or 4.7 white to 1 black.
4.7 ÷ 2.1 = 2.2
Any person is twice as likely to be raped by a black person than a white person.
You can’t refute government statistics.
