Kathy Castor: ‘Bringing Jobs to Tampa Bay’
This is the mass email sent out by Kathy Castor dated February 10, 2010
Dear Friend,
We are all working to boost the pace of economic recovery. I see encouraging signs, but we must remain focused on jobs. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working in our community. Last month, we welcomed President Obama and Vice President Biden as they shared with us the great news that Florida is receiving $1.25 billion to build a high-speed rail line, a transportation initiative that is expected to create 23,000 jobs. We also cheered when we learned that housing efforts in our region were awarded $100 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Here are more details about this great news.
HISTORIC JOBS INITIATIVE
I was honored to travel with President Obama and Vice President Biden to the University of Tampa for a monumental jobs announcement: Florida is receiving $1.25 billion for one of the first high-speed rail links in a new national high-speed rail system. This investment in our community will boost our economic recovery in the short term, while providing Florida with a foundation for long-term business growth and innovation. The grants were highly competitive, and our efforts to unite business, labor and community leaders paid off.

INITIATIVE CREATES JOBS
In January, Florida was awarded $348 million, more than any other state, for housing initiatives through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, including more than $100 million for the Tampa Bay Area. Tampa Housing Authority will use most of its $38 million award to revitalize the downtown Tampa Central Park Village area and transform it into a new community that will uplift this historic neighborhood and create thousands of jobs.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
Last week, I visited Tampa Family Health Centers to meet some of the great medical professionals who were hired thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. They are grateful for their jobs during this difficult economy. Tampa Family Health Centers has been awarded nearly $5 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create jobs and to build new clinics to serve the health-care needs of our community in East Tampa and Egypt Lake, so more jobs are on the way.
