The cases are divided among the country as follows: The Southeast region, accounted for 63.4% of cases with 936, 500 records, has the largest number of cases, followed by the Midwest (271,773 cases; 18.4%), Northeast (149,678 cases, 10.1%), South (70,299 cases, 4.8%) and North (48,667 cases, 3.3%).

Health officials in Brazil say there has been a reduction in the number of fatalities from dengue. They cite the number of fatalities recorded in 2010 was 638 compared to the number of deaths recorded this year, 573, a decrease of 10 percent.

However, as the AFP reported, this years number of fatalities were higher than 2011 and 2012, with 473 and 292 deaths, respectively.

They also report a greater than 60 percent reduction in severe dengue cases this year compared to 2010 (from 16,758 to 6,566).

Sixty percent of all the dengue cases reported in 2013 were dengue fever subtype type 4.
