Bradley Manning says he was bullied for being gay, seeking sex change surgery

Private Manning told an online friend that fellow troops at Fort Drum, the barracks in New York where he was stationed before being sent to Iraq in 2009, had discovered his sexuality.

“It took them a while, but they started figuring me out, making fun of me, mocking me, harassing me, heating up with one or two physical attacks,” Pt Manning wrote to Zachary Antolak, age 19.

Under the policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell”, which is in the process of being lifted, gay US military personnel were allowed to serve only if they did not disclose their sexuality.

Conversations between the two men were published in a profile of Pt Manning in New York magazine. Mr Antolak is said to have adopted a female persona, “ZJ Antolak”, while chatting on the internet.

The article claims that Pt Manning, who was working as an intelligence analyst, also spoke online with a gender counselor and said that he wanted to undergo a sex change procedure.

“Bradley felt he was female,” the counselor is reported to have told the magazine. “He was very solid on that … He really wanted to do surgery”.

The counselor also told the magazine that Pt Manning said in November 2009 that he felt “like a monster” because an Iraqi man was killed after US forces acted on intelligence that he had provided.

“He was very, very distressed,” the counselor reportedly said. The US government alleges that later the same month, Pt Manning made contact with Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks.
