Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review June 26 2018

WWE Smackdown Live comes from Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California this week. Shinsuke Nakamura was supposed to face Jeff Hardy for the United States Championship, but due to injury Nakamura is unable to compete. There will be an Open Challenge for the United States Championship instead.

Show Opener – Miz TV

BodyslamThe Miz was on fire and the Bludgeon Brothers were quiet, just like they should be. The crowd popped huge for Bryan, as usual, and both tonight’s main event and the smoldering feud between Bryan and Miz were set up. Well done opening segment.

Rusev with Aiden English vs. Xavier Woods with Big E and Kofi Kingston

Rusev forces a tap out from Xavier Woods with The Accolade.

BodyslamThese two men delivered a great match to start off the show. New Day added just enough of their silliness, and Rusev nailed his post-match promo. Xavier Woods is fantastic and Rusev came off as the dominant eminent champion. Great execution.

Jeff Hardy Backstage

BodyslamCool and creepy Jeff Hardy is my favorite Jeff Hardy. He seems to be at his best when he gets to have freedom with his appearance like this.

Naomi and Lana Backstage with the cast of GLOW

BodyslamIt is a cross-promotion segment with the stars of GLOW. It was done about as well as can be expected, and Naomi and Lana may be working together? Interesting plot twist.

United States Championship Open Challenge
Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Eric Young with Killian Dane and Alexander Wolfe

Eric Young Wins by Disqualification

BodyslamThere was a big botched Twist of Fate early in the match. It almost ruined this match’s rating, but the finish saved it. The Usos came into the ringside area from the the crowd to get revenge on Sanity. Eric Young pulled one of the Usos into the ring and fought him there, so as soon as Young was hit, the match was over and he won. It’s exactly the kind of chaos that fits with who Sanity is supposed to be. Coming back from commercial we discover Paige has made a six man tag match with all of these men participating.

Jeff Hardy and Jimmy and Jey Uso vs. Sanity (Eric Young, Killian Dane, Alexander Wolfe)

Jeff Hardy Pins Alexander Wolfe after a Swanton Bomb.

BodyslamSanity has the right people to make their gimmick work, and they can pull off incredible matches. This was exactly the kind of match they needed to show off what they can do, and got to do it with some of the best tag team competitors in WWE. This didn’t have the awkwardness Young and Hardy had at first in their singles match. Compelling from beginning to end.

Becky Lynch vs. Sonya Deville with Mandy Rose

Becky Lynch makes Sonya Deville tap out to The Disarmer.

BodyslamBecky Lynch is on the rise, and both women looked good here. Deville is getting better every week. It will be interesting to see if Becky feuds with both women for an extended time or if she moves on soon.

James Ellsworth Backstage

BodyslamIf you’re going to have James Ellsworth on the roster, you have to own it. This owned it.

Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega

BodyslamZelina Vega owns her role as Almas’ mouthpiece once again. She is so short that the camera was cutting off the bottom of her face. That style shot works better without two people with a huge height difference.

James Ellsworth In Ring

BodyslamEllsworth truly can work a mic well, and he controlled the crowd in this segment. Paige coming out and playing the strong GM worked well for her and this show.

Daniel Bryan vs. Harper with Rowan

Daniel Bryan Wins by Disqualification after Rowan interferes to stop the Yes Lock. During the post-match beat down, Kane returned and stopped the Bludgeon Brothers. The former members of Team Hell No hug, and then Paige comes out to announce that The Bludgeon Brothers will defend their Tag Team Championships against Team Hell No.

BodyslamThe match was incredible. Harper is so agile for a big man, and combined with Bryan the two work well together. Plenty of excitement throughout the match, the right finish, and a huge surprise return at the end. And Paige once again seizes opportunity as GM. There’s not much more you can ask for from a main event.
