Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review July 31 2018

WWE Smackdown Live is from my hometown at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. Tonight is the next stage of the Tag Team Tournament with The Usos facing The Bar to see who moves on to face The New Day.

Show Opener with Becky Lynch In Ring Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamBecky Lynch cut a great promo, Carmella showed off her acting chops, and Charlotte made her return and hit an Exploder Suplex on Carmella. YOu can’t ask for much more. Great segment.

The Usos Backstage

BodyslamOf course The Usos are bringing up The Rock, since people keep bringing up The Rock. But The Usos are a great promo regardless.

General Manager Paige and Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella Backstage

BodyslamPaige has control of her show in a way that Kurt Angle never has on RAW. I’m loving her in this role.

The Usos (Jimmy and Jey) vs. The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro) with The New Day on commentary

Sheamus Rolls Up Jimmy(?) for the pin after blocking a Giant Splash. The New Day confront The Bar, who retreats, after the match.

BodyslamThese two teams can put on an incredible show, and they did it again. The Bar came back and is running straight to the top of the tag team division. It was a good move to keep The New Day’s commentary off the air for the most part. They’re entertaining, but they would have derailed commentary and stole attention from the match.

Charlotte Flair Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamIt’s great to see Charlotte back in action, even if I do like her better as a heel.

Samoa Joe In Ring

BodyslamSamoa Joe is so well spoken and sure of who he is, and that makes him one of the best promos in the business. He cut low on AJ Styles and brought the family into this. As a fan of their ten year rivalry in TNA, I can’t wait to see these two at SummerSlam in their first match against each other in WWE.

Jeff Hardy In Ring

BodyslamJeff Hardy’s promo was strange, but the action that followed made this a winner. Jeff Hardy has the odds stacked against him with Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura both focused on him. Orton desecrated Hardy in a message to the WWE Universe. This is quickly becoming the most interesting story on Smackdown Live.

Becky Lynch Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamBecky has some acting chops as well. The range of emotion in this interview was spot on.

Lana vs. Zelina Vega with Andrade Cien Almas

Zelina Vega Rolls Up Lana and pins her with a handful of tights. Vega took advantage of a distraction from Almas which prompted a run in from Aiden English to even the odds.

BodyslamZelina Vega is great in the ring, and it’s about time she gets to show it. I was beginning to think WWE was going to waste her talent and leave her a valet. Lana is much improved and was better than I expected in this match. It was nice to see a match from fresh faces in the Women’s Division. The matchups have been getting stale.

The Bludgeon Brothers Backstage

BodyslamThe Bludgeon Brothers cut a short and creepy promo, exactly what they need. Not too much talking, just enough to be intimidating.

Aiden English and Lana Backstage

BodyslamThe collapse of the WWE Universe’s favorite holiday is sad, but compelling.

Daniel Bryan In Ring

BotchThis crossed the threshold of too much talking and not enough wrestling on the show. It was a predictable segment, with more flashbacks than substance. We know Bryan and Miz are feuding, we know the history, we know what happened last week. Luckily Bryan is so loved by the fans that this satiated most of them because they got to see their hero. We have a long time until SummerSlam if these two are just going to talk and have cringeworthy segments until then. At least we have sort of established a match between them.

Carmella vs Charlotte
If Charlotte wins she is included in the Smackdown Women’s Championship match at SummerSlam

Charlotte Flair wins by Submission forcing Carmella to tap out to the Figure Eight.

BodyslamThere were several botched moves, including the worst Hurricanrana I’ve seen in a long time from Carmella. Criticisms of her wrestling abilities are valid. But she’s a heat magnet and can tell a great story in the ring. The story of this match was fantastic and seized attention. It’s not always about how great your moves are, but can you keep the fans from turning away so they never miss it when you botch a move? That’s the key. You’ll always see it when Charlotte or Carmella mess up, because you’ll be watching.
