Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review August 7 2018

WWE Smackdown Live is from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida this week. Tonight we will see the final match in the Tag Team Tournament between The New Day and The Bar to find out who will face The Bludgeon Brothers for the Tag Team Championships.

Show Opener with Randy Orton In Ring

BodyslamOrton is masterful in the ring, with a mic or with a match. This “blame the fans for my evil deeds” schtick may not stop the fans from cheering for him regardless of how well he does it though. I can’t wait to see what he does next to Jeff Hardy and what he does to whoever is next on his list. And I’ll cheer for it.

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair Backstage

BodyslamBecky and Charlotte take a shot at Sasha and Bayley. Precursor to the first Women’s Tag Team Championship match?

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair vs. The IIConics (Peyton Royce and Billie Kay) with Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella on commentary

Charlotte Flair makes Peyton Royce tap out to the Figure 8 for a Submission victory.

BodyslamThe IIconics got a “BORING” chant during their promo at the opening of the match, because they took way too long to get around to taking a shot at Becky being in Charlotte’s shadow. Their performance is great for everything but their in ring skills. But they’re getting better. Becky and Charlotte looked great in the ring and as a tag team. If the WWE is going to a Women’s Tag Team Division, it’s going to be a tough choice whether to keep these two in singles or go with them as a team.

The New Day Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamWacky and entertaining. Standard fare for The New Day, who are anything but standard themselves.

The Miz Backstage

BodyslamThe Miz gives Daniel Bryan a match at SummerSlam. It’s official, finally.

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair Backstage

BodyslamThe tension between these two is palpable. They’re doing a great job with this angle. And are they sure they’re not Sasha and Bayley?

AJ Styles In Ring

BotchOne of AJ’s weaker promo’s I’ve seen. Maybe he was supposed to appear flustered because it’s been made personal by Samoa Joe. But if seemed more like he was struggling than passionate, and the ending fell flat.

Lana and Rusev Backstage

Bodyslam Aiden English is forgiven, but all is not forgotten. But Lana and Rusev are married, did they really not talk about this for a week and Rusev is just now apologizing? The dangers of knowing too much as a fan, I suppose.

Lana with Rusev vs. Zelina Vega with Andrade Cien Almas

Zelina Vega pins Lana after a Double Knee Strike on the turnbuckles. Aiden English came out from backstage to help Rusev with Almas and knocked Lana off the top rop to give Vega the opportunity.

BodyslamLana is performing at a level I never expected this quickly. Those suplexes were perfect and delivered with authority. Vega is great also, and the story in the ring and how this continues was done well. This is the most compelling story on Smackdown right now.

Shinsuke Nakamura Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamR Truth is going to pin Carmella for a shot at the United States Championship. This is too funny. I love R Truth.

The Miz Interview Backstage with Byron Saxton In Ring

BodyslamThe Miz was on fire with his promo. Daniel Bryan’s attack and their ensuing fight was fantastic.

Non Title Match
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. R-Truth

Shinsuke Nakamura pins R Truth after the Kinshasa Knee Strike.

BodyslamR Truth isn’t just hilarious, he can go in the ring. Of course Nakamura is going to win, but this match was more than I bargained for. More R Truth please.

The Bludgeon Brothers Backstage

BodyslamMuch better long promo than what they’ve had to work with in the past. It seems like the writers are starting to figure out how to work with this gimmick.

3 on 2 Handicap Match
The Bludgeon Brothers vs. 3SK (Julio Rivera, Lucky Lee, Hobble Kozlov?)

The Bludgeon Brothers win by pinfall after a double team Top Rope Clothesline

Botch Even in a handicap match, it didn’t make sense for the Tag Team Champions to be facing unknown jobbers. I understand that they haven’t had a match in a while, but since when is WWE short on tag teams they are willing to bury?

Winner Faces Bludgeon Brothers at SummerSlam for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships
The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston with Xavier Woods) vs. The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro)

Kofi Kingston pins Cesaro after he and Big E delivered The Midnight Hour.

BodyslamThe crowd broke into “THIS IS AWESOME” chants multiple times, and they were not wrong. Fantastic match from some of the best in the business. Momentum shifts, false finishes, and a sense that anything could happen. The look on Big E’s face while in Cesaro’s Sharpshooter was a moment that defines what professional wrestling is all about and why we watch.
