Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review August 14 2018

WWE Smackdown Live comes from the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina this week for the final show before Summerslam. AJ Styles has a promise for SummerSlam. The New Day will face Sanity. Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Carmella will be face to face, and more leading into SummerSlam this Sunday.

Show Opener Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella In Ring

BodyslamA decent opening segment, with solid mic work from all of the ladies. The Smackdown Women’s Championship match build gets center stage at the beginning of the show, and these women have earned it, including General Manager Paige.

Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville with Carmella on commentary

Becky Lynch forces Mandy Rose to tap out to the Disarm Her for a Submission victory.

BodyslamSome great parts of this match took place during the commercial break, and there was a lot of talking between them that was easily detectable, even during the commercials. Luckily the match was so good that none of this bothered me. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville’s matches are at a new level, showing their continued improvement. Great match to open the show.

Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch Backstage

BodyslamThe tension between these two has reached its crescendo before SummerSlam.

Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper and Rowan) vs. The Triple Threat

The Bludgeon Brothers decimate all three men before the match officially starts.

BotchAnother squash match for Harper and Rowan, who my son renamed Jobberbusters tonight. It was nice to see hit their big moves, but another match with nameless local wrestlers is just as cheap as it was last, but worse because they didn’t even do a real match.

The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods) vs. Sanity (Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, and Killian Dane)

Big E pins Killian Dane after he and Xavier Woods deliver Up Up Down Down.

BodyslamEven with some wildly inaccurate strikes, this match was so exciting that the mistakes weren’t detractors. There were hard hitting moments and big spots. The rhythm and flow of the match were perfect and everybody in the arena and my living room were happy.

General Manager Paige and Samoa Joe BackStage

BodyslamJoe once again delivers smooth dialogue, and Paige is trying to maintain order on her show. A stark difference from the GM on RAW.

Aiden English vs. Andrade Cien Almas with Zelina Vega

Andrade Cien Almas delivers the Hammerlock DDT to Aiden English and scores a Pinfall victory.

BodyslamA surprisingly satisfying match considering where these to are in the pecking order. English looked good and Almas looked fantastic. That spinning back elbow. That Hammerlock DDT. He has so many moves that look incredible every time he delivers them. He deserves his meteoric rise through the Smackdown roster.

WWE Champion AJ Styles and General Manager Paige Backstage

BodyslamPaige is still on top of her show, and AJ Styles is agitated.

The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan Vignettes

BodyslamAll night they have been interspersing the story of Daniel Bryan and The Miz for the last eight years to build up to their match at Summerslam. They’ve done a great job of getting anyone up to date who has not been watching this unfold over the the years.

Jeff Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin

Jeff Hardy hits the Twist of Fate and pins Shelton Benjamin. Shinsuke Nakamura comes out to attack Jeff Hardy after the match, but Hardy fight him off and lands the Swanton Bomb.

AJ Styles In Ring

BodyslamSamoa Joe got a letter from AJ Styles’ wife telling him that everything he said was true? Cue the foreboding music. Styles had another weak promo, but Joe saved it all. This built up some bad blood real fast, so hopefully this match gets some time on this overstuffed SummerSlam card. WWE fans are probably most looking forward to The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan, but professional wrestling fans are most looking forward to AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe. And now it’s got some weight from within.
