Bob Newhart shines in ‘Big Bang Theory’ season 7 appearance, represents the ‘theme of the show’

In a night filled with writers launching softballs at the veteran comedian, Bob Newhart’s return to The Big Bang Theory was certainly a hit.

After a brief back-and-forth, full of Newhart one-liners, Leonard is asked to review a paper written by Jeffries, which enrages Sheldon. The competition heats up as Bill Nye is recruited by Sheldon, which instigates an age old angst for Newhart’s character.

Sheldon announces, “Sorry, I replaced you with a newer model.”

The first appearance of Newhart on the show earned him his first Emmy Award and it would shock fans if the comedian wasn’t nominated again, but not surprising at all if he wins.

“This episode is so totally different from the one I was in before,” Newhart tells Zap2it in a preview interview. “You really get insight into Sheldon and Leonard’s relationship, which I felt was very tender.”

“I have one scene where I ask Leonard, ‘Why do you put up with Sheldon?’ He says, ‘Well, he’s a friend of mine.’ And I say, ‘Why?’ In other words, what does he have to offer as a friend? And Leonard says, ‘I can’t help it.’ And that’s kind of the theme of the show.”

CBS prospered again with the appearance as the sitcom landed in the number spot for the night, beating out NFL football. The Big Bang Theory” attracted 16.9 million viewers, according to updated ratings.
