‘Big Bang Theory’ star Jim Parsons to star God in Broadway comedy
Jim Parsons is heading back to Broadway, this time to play God in The Last Testament: A Memoir By God. Joe Mantello (The Last Ship, Casa Valentina, Wicked) will direct the 90-minute play that has God revealing the mysteries of the Bible and answering humanity’s greatest existential questions.
The THR summarizes that “The critically-acclaimed 2011 book is billed as being transcribed by former Daily Show with Jon Stewart head writer and executive producer David Javerbaum, who is also a Tony nominee with co-writer Adam Schlesinger for their score to the 2008 musical Cry-Baby. He won two Emmys — in addition to his 11 with The Daily Show — for co-writing songs (again with Schlesinger) performed by host Neil Patrick Harris on the Tony Awards two years running.”
Parsons, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Big Bang Theory actor, will star as the Almighty in a limited engagement of An Act of God. Previews will begin May 5 at Studio 54, ahead of its May 28 opening.
“I chose Jim to play Me because I relish the irony of telling the real story of the Six Days of Creation through the star of The Big Bang Theory. Plus, he’s funny. The theater was also chosen for ironic reasons, as Studio 54 — up to this point — has been the single most God-less place in the universe. And as for our director, Joe Mantello, that was not ironic. I’ve been a fan of his since Wicked!”
Casting of two angels and the design team will be announced at a later date. 101 Productions, Ltd. will serve as executive producers of the production.
