‘Big Bang Theory’ season 7 will keep Penny’s last name a secret says producer, talks D&D ‘love scene’
One of the biggest comedies on television is The Big Bang Theory, headed into their seventh season, and while Penny’s life is mostly an open book, one secret has never been revealed.
Vulture spoke with Big Bang executive producer Steve Molaro and he confirmed we may never know.
“What name could we possibly pick that would be satisfying at this point? You know, I don’t think we will [reveal it],” Molaro said. “We’re kind of a superstitious lot here. We’ve made it this far without knowing Penny’s last name. I think we’re good not finding out.”
The “Big Bang Theory” season finale presented Penny and her boyfriend Leonard (Johnny Galecki) with quite the obstacle when Leonard was offered a job that would leave him on a boat for four months.
Additionally, the final three episodes climaxes with Sheldon and Amy getting intimate.
“We could not be more proud of how that scene turned out. Jim and Mayim are spectacular. It was beautiful. I loved that we could have such a big, energetic, broad, funny story line, [along with] Simon doing impressions and everyone drinking and playing Dungeons & Dragons, but then just take this hard left turn and go to a place that suddenly gets really quiet and really intimate between Sheldon and Amy. One of the writers, Tara Hernandez, described the scene as “so intimate it’s almost hard to watch.”
The producer dodged confirmation of the direction of their relationship.
“There are no steps planned at the moment. We do our best to let the characters take us where they want to go. She obviously wants to have a complete and long‑lasting relationship with Sheldon. There are challenges with that. We have learned, especially in that episode, while it’s going very slowly, he’s doing the best he can [and] tells her, “It may not seem like it to you, but for me, this is extremely intimate.” I think that helps explain where he’s at. I think it helps explain why she is willing to hang in there for this guy.”
Season 7 is scheduled to premiere in September 2013.
