Best Ways To Start Saving Water At Home

Water Saving Tips
Water is a valuable resource and is something we should all try to use less of. Not only is it going to be kinder to the environment, but it will save you money on your water bills.

Minor changes to your water usage can still make an impact without dramatically affecting your lifestyle.

Start in the bathroom
The bathroom is the first place you should look when trying to alter your water usage habits. There are a range of different things you can do to in this area and you need to get the whole family involved.

If you have an older shower, switching to a water saving shower head is the first step. This isn’t a difficult installation and you could even do it yourself. Next, think about how long you actually spend in the shower.

Install a waterproof timer and keep those showers under 5 minutes while keeping the pressure low. Not only will your water bills be cheaper, but your gas or electricity bills will be too!

It isn’t just your shower which uses a significant amount of water; your sink is also a culprit. When you are shaving, or brushing your teeth, turn the water off. Wash your razor in a basin with some water and a plug rather than holding it under running water.

Check your toilet, if it is using a full flush every time you could save a large amount of water by switching to a dual flush model. If you need help, call in an expert. For example, a plumber in Sydney can assess your requirements if you live in the area.

Look at your kitchen
The kitchen is another area you can focus on in order to reduce your water use. A dishwasher generally uses less water than hand washing and you can purchase water conscious models. It is worth paying a bit extra for a more efficient product in the short term to benefit in the long term.

If you do prefer hand washing, soak your dishes in a sink filled with water rather than keeping the tap running continuously. Choose water wise taps and steam your food in a small amount of water rather than boiling in an overflowing pot. Any excess water from the kitchen can potentially be used in the garden.

Remember the laundry
Washing clothes is something which is unavoidable and water is certainly required. Just like your dishwasher, invest in a washing machine which is designed with efficiency in mind.

Your plumber in Sydney may even be able to help you set up a system which allows you to use your grey water on your garden. A washing machine which can adapt its water level to the amount of clothes is the best choice.

Don’t neglect the outdoors
Most people want a nice looking garden, but you have to be careful to choose the right plants for your environment. Select hardy varieties or those which are native to your area. A low maintenance garden will require less water, and less time!

Set up an irrigation system with a timer and only water when you really need to. You should try to avoid watering at the hottest time of day, wait until it cools down to make your water go further.

A water tank can be installed to water the garden, and excess water can be collected from your downpipes. While you shouldn’t use this for your own consumption, it is especially great for your trees!

A lush area of green grass is a landscaper’s dream, but it does require constant care. Instead, have smaller lawn areas, or try fake grass. If you do go for the real thing, choose the right type of lawn for your climate. If you have a swimming pool you should keep it covered when not in use, this will keep it clean and need less water to refill.

Instead of washing your car with the hose, visit a carwash who recycle their water. Your vehicle will be shiny and clean and you will feel good about doing something positive for the environment.

Be conscious of your habits
When trying to use less water, you need to make a conscious effort to change your habits. Check your home to make sure there are no leaky taps and monitor your water bills for any irregularities. A few minor changes to your appliances, washing methods and outdoor water usage could make a noticeable difference.
