Benedict Cumberbatch says ‘Infinity War’ is ‘mind blowing epic,’ silent on ‘Doctor Strange 2’ plans

While Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, he’s silent on the sequel to his character’s standalone film.

While promoting Infinity War during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the topic of Doctor Strange 2 came up and Cumberbatch sounded uncertain about the film.

“Not at the moment, no. The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate,” the Sherlock star revealed.

A post-credits scene pointed directly to Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo taking up the mantle of main villain and the box office success will certainly guarantee the project, so stay turned for details.

The movie did practically set up the villain of a would-be sequel, with Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo taking a villainous turn in a post-credits scene.

As far as that Avengers film, Cumberbatch went in a bit blind, “…it’s not Marvel’s practice to hand around the whole script of any particular one of their enterprises, especially a film as big as this, and as secret as this. I kind of had to have a bit of an overview to understand what I was doing in it. Maybe I’m just a bit more stupid than the other actors involved. I just need a little bit of special care. And they were very sweet, and chained me to something immovable whilst I read it, and unchained me after I finished reading it.”

Despite the remarks, he HAS read the script and praised the film: “It’s just mind-blowingly epic. What I thought is, this just doesn’t stop. Once it starts, it does. Not. Stop. It’s just this horrible, brilliant, terrifying, at times funny, at times very moving, relentless action. It’s like everyone’s constantly in crisis, and catching up with themselves, and it’s really breathless to read a script like that. This isn’t a slow burn. You’re really thrown in helter-skelter. [Laughs] It’s got a lot of facets to it, but I think the main one for me was just how utterly relentless the events and action were.”

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers Infinity War arrives in theaters on April 27.

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson says the sequel will explore the multiverse: “That’s certainly where the comics went in the ’80s but I also think that was probably the weakest era of the comics. The alternate dimensions and possibilities of the multiverse that we set up with the first film already give limitless possibilities.”
