Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman set to return for ‘Sherlock’ season 3 in January
Described as “the world’s biggest premiere date mystery” was solved in an EW article announcing the return of the popular BBC One series, Sherlock.
Sherlock will return to PBS Masterpiece on Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. airing back-to-back with the other hit series on the channel, Downton Abbey (which returns Jan. 5).
“They’re fantastic,”Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton says of the new episodes. “They are jaw dropping. They are like small movies. Benedict and Martin are so in their Sherlock-Watson groove. They are so comfortable with that relationship it’s like being in the room with them.”
Sherlock executive producer Sue Vertue added in a statement: “We are hugely excited about this next series of Sherlock, and have worked closely with our partners, Masterpiece and PBS, to bring these episodes to U.S. audiences in January. We promise our fans that Season 3 is worth waiting for.”
The series has been on hiatus since January 2012, and fan anticipation has been growing after Season 2′s cliffhanger finale. In that episode, “The Reichenbach Fall,” Sherlock appeared to leap to his death from a tall building but was afterward revealed to be secretly and inexplicably alive.
The mystery of Sherlock’s survival will be unraveled in the Season 3 premiere, titled “The Empty Hearse,” co-creator Steven Moffat told Comic-Con International attendees during the show’s panel presentation this summer, promising a “rational explanation.”
“There really are only a few ways you can fall from a roof and survive,” co-creator Mark Gatiss said at the time. “It’s not black magic.”
