Ben Affleck discusses his hesitation to play Batman in ‘Batman vs Superman’ as the ‘tired and weary’ hero
Fans were outraged and reluctant as Ben Affleck will be joining Henry Cavill as the superhero duo in Batman vs Superman (a name which might change BTW) and the Argo star confessed he was hesitant to jump on the project and explained his reasoning for taking the role.
Speaking to Al Norton and 411Mania.com [via CS], Affleck explained the factors that were involved in deciding to play the iconic character and the moment when it shifted to “I want to do this.”
“Initially I was reluctant as I felt I didn’t fit the traditional mold but once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris and Christian made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited. Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations. The truth is, it’s the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack’s vision.”
The parallels have been drawn to the famous comic book Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller where an elderly Batman faces off against Superman, his ideology and ultimately battling him to the presumed death.
While there are no details for fans to lock in, Afflect did confirm the Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara‘s description of the new Batman as “tired and weary and seasoned and been doing it for awhile”, but the actor wouldn’t say more than that because he wants “to capitalize on what is new about this iteration by having it be a surprise to the audience.”
Tsujihara is a huge Affleck fan.
“Ben is perfect for the vision Zack has for that character. The fact that you saw such a passionate response in the blogosphere is really kind of a testament to the love that people have for this character.”
